ค่อนข้าง /khɔ̂n khâaŋ/: somewhat, rather, relatively, fairly, pretty, quite

khɔ̂n khâaŋ (ค่อนข้าง) is an adverb of degree or level used to give emphasis to an adjective or adverb. It has a meaning similar to “quite” but ค่อนข้าง /khɔ̂n khâaŋ/ is used with gradable or non-gradable adjectives similar to the word “rather” in English. We also often use it to express something emphatic, like an affirmation, agreement or acceptance. It can be used both positively and negatively, e.g. ค่อนข้างดี /khɔ̂n khâaŋ dii/“quite good” vs. ค่อนข้างแย่ /khɔ̂n khâaŋ yɛ̂ɛ/“rather terrible”. It lightens the weight of your statement in either direction. You can also use it with pretty much anything that acts as an adjective: ค่อนข้างหิว /khɔ̂n khâaŋ hǐw/“rather hungry”; ค่อนข้างเมา /khɔ̂n khâaŋ maw/“fairly drunk” (หิว /hǐw/ and เมา /maw/ are verbs in Thai).
